April is Autism Awareness month and we are celebrating this week in school from the 19th - 23rd April.
'Autism is now understood as a complex, invisible condition which a person is born with.
Autism is a developmental condition which means that the way a person communicates, interacts and understands other people, and the world, is different to those who do not have the condition.
It can be described as a “spectrum” which means it impacts different people, in different ways, to differing degrees at different times and in different situations.' (AsIam - Ireland)
In highlighting Autism Awareness in school we aim:
to broaden the community's understanding of this condition
to deepen our knowledge so we can include all those with different talents and capabilities on our learning journey
to heighten our awareness of the differences in sensory processing, communication, reading social situations, managing anxiety and stressful situations, that Autistic people experience, so we can make allowances and create environments where they are happy, supported and free to learn.
